New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was re-elected by a wide margin on Tuesday, easily overtaking Republican Nicole Malliotakis to become the first Democratic mayor to win two terms in the city since the early 1980s.

De Blasio was winning with nearly 60% of the vote to Malliotakis’ 26% at 9:30 p.m., with 60% of the vote counted, according to the city’s Board of Elections.

The election capped months of sluggish campaigning that elicited little interest among voters, and offered de Blasio scant competition in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly 7 to 1.

Many voters said they cast their ballots for de Blasio because they felt the city generally is doing well under his leadership. Few, however, expressed excitement about the mayor, or about what a second term might bring.
