The sales total, almost 40% larger than last year’s, is larger than the GDP of Iceland or Cameroon, and larger than the US shopping holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
Alibaba’s Singles’ Day purchases between 2012 and 2017
Singles’ Day (the shorthand date, 11/11, is filled with ones) celebrates people without partners—the opposite of Valentine’s Day. It was largely created by Alibaba as an opportunity to offer major discounts.
Now an army of delivery people will work to mail an estimated 1.5 billion parcels in one week— more than a whole year’s worth of deliveries in China in 2006.
